If this is your first introduction to Ruby Dixon, I hope Bull Moon Rising warmly welcomes you to the indie romance world. Dixon is a story crafter whose mastery of plot and world-building makes her a brilliant ambassador of monster romance, which I say as a passionate and obsessed reader. That is all to say, this was a fun story to read.
Aspeth is now one of my new favorite characters. In her, I saw a compelling character who also reminded me of so many women in my corner of the book world. We readers, too, are often bookish, soft, fond of our glasses, and fantasize about our own Hawks. If this sounds like you, consider picking this book as a form of indulgent self-care.
I purchased both the audiobook and hardcover of this story. The hardcover is gorgeous. It looks pretty and mystical; its saturated pinks and purples stand out on my bookshelf. The audiobook has dual narrators who executed dialogue and narrative perfectly. I cross my fingers for this book to turn into a series so I can hear more of Felicity Munroe and Hiro Diaz.
My only worry about this book is the very thing that makes it a “debut” of sorts for Dixon. It has been trad published. If Ruby had published this as usual with her own devices, I’d already be looking forward to the announcement for the next installment by the end of this year. I hope Ace Books does not let us and our sorceress of spicy stories down.
