Obsidian Feathers by N. Cáceres is the best story I’ve read in 2023 so far. Reading this book made me stalk her socials for any fan art, search for updates on her upcoming work, and sign up for an ARC of the next book. Her writing also cleared my acne and made my hair shiny.
Seriously though, Cáceres has set a standard for me on how deep one can send their characters into darkness in a Romance story without losing themselves. In fact, these characters find themselves in their darkness rather than lose themselves. IMPORTANTLY, I don’t think one can appreciate just how Cáceres did this if you divorce her story crafting from the indigenous culture and norms she weaves into this book. That’s what makes this work.
I also want to take the time to applaud Cáceres for the fat girl representation in her book. She didn’t shy away from the darkness of her characters and she didn’t shy away from the strength and erotic power of a curvy feminine body. I think it is still a fight to celebrate fat women. While Cáceres is flipping the table over on Eurocentric norms in monster romance, she’s also doing it for eroticizing fat women. It is as beautiful and righteous to witness as reading Xochitl take her justice.
Of course, I cannot recommend reading into the content warning enough. If there’s a dark pit of human nature to explore, Cáceres will go there. I found myself yelling “Yeah, let’s go!” with this author at the lead, but no worries if the pits are too deep for some readers.
